Post Electric Picnic

Back home, clean and dry and already I'm up the walls with new projects, so I better put the Electric Picnic to bed. I know I said I'd take more photos, and I did take some, but still not a whole lot. I didn't round the whole of the Greencrafts areas, let alone the festival!!

My fav area, apart from Greencrafts area, naturally, was The Trailer Park, The stage was fantastic, the deckchairs was very comfy, and we saw 2 great bands. The 1st, an Elvis cover band, dont know the name, but it suited the place perfect, and John Blek and the Rats. Who had played in Dingle over the summer, but I missed them. The Tiki Bar, although in a lovely trailer, was a bit disappointing. A few plastic pics of hula girls, and that was it. I was a bit disappointed with Trenchtown as well. If Lidl did reggae decorations, well, Trenchtown bought them. Really not impressed with it this year, not much of an atmosphere. Well, when I was there anyway. Maybe it got better later...

But overall, had a fantastic time, the weather was dreamy, and camping under beautiful horse chestnut trees, was divine! I was very sensible, didn't drink too much, slept surprisingly well, but I must admit, ate an awful lot. The food is always fantastic, and my helper Aideen, a master chef for the weekend. I saw some half decent instillation's, (the crows were the best). Met up with  up with lots of old friends and made some new ones. The most chilled relaxed EP I've ever had. And to come home with tents and stuff dry... Perfect!

We did a good bit of walking, lingered at most bands. I always prefer to seek out new music, rather than listen to ones I already know. Yes, I saw The Cure, and although a big fan of their early stuff, a 3 hours set was just too much time, so I didnt stay long. The 2 bands that really struck me were...

Electric Picnic 2012!

So, I'm off to do my 5th Electric Picnic!

The Electric Picnic always signifies the last of the summer days, the shorter nights, and well, with the monsoon rains we've been having, some particularily wet camping. Cant believe the summer is coming to an end already!

I'm off to teach workshops in the Greencrafts Craft Village. Each year we have gotten a bigger space, and bigger audience and it is always an amazing epxerience. I havent seen the finalised tutor list, but I expect there to be all manor of stitchery going on; knitting, felting, sewing, and more. Lots of other traditional skills will be there - people working with wood, clay, metal, slate, etc...

I know I am biased, but its always lovely to hang out in the Grencrafts area...If you are coming to the festival, come down to the Greencrafts area, say hello.
This year, I will attempt to take photos. Last year, I didnt take many...

Electric Picnic 2011 and other stuff

I haven't been online much this Summer, not blogging, not even tweeting. The main reason was I wasn't in the mood, I felt like I had nothing happy and exciting to contribute so I kept stum. As much as I enjoyed the Body and Soul Festival, I felt exhausted, and drained after it, I was even thinking of backing out of the Electric Picnic. I think I went through a mini midlife craft crisis. So after a lot of soul-searching I came to the conclusion am I fecking mad?

ELECTRIC PICNIC 09!!

Its official, I will be attending this year's Electric Picnic again, and I'll have a crazy range of workshops and demonstrations of a fibre nature going on!!

The theme I picked this year, is Eco/Re-cycled. There will be 4 workshops on offer, each workshop has some Eco/re-cycled theme. More details to follow...

Also, to celebrate 2009 being UN International Year of Natural Fibres, I will have info for your reading leisure on the confusing array of fairtrade and organic logos, fact sheets on natural fibres, with lots of samples for you to feel up. Its all touch and go at this years EP!!

As usual I have a goal to make something crazy for displaying on the stand. The Crocheted Coral Reef got a fantastic reception last year, so hopefully the stand this year, will work out just as well....I have to make it yet, so no guarantees...Its easy to come up with great ideas on paper, another to try make it!!

Electric Picnic 09

My proposal for this year's Electric Picnic. The Greencrafts area is going to be bigger this year, and hopefully if we get in, there will be lots of stitchery going on...

Electric Fish

Most of the Fish I made for my display are made from recycled materials. Scrap plastics, leftover bits and bobs from previous workshops, charity shop finds. I think its important to promote imagination, in using everyday items, especially when working with kids. As well as promoting recycling, it also means the kids will be able to make things from stuff they have at home and so parents don't have to fork out for expensive art materials. As I was promoting crochet, each of the fish had some part of it crocheted, eg tail, eye, etc

Teachers - these make great Fabric and Fibre Projects!

Here's some of the materials I used:
coat hangers, chicken-wire, cardboard, tights, pop-socks, plastic bags, scrap wool and coloured threads, toilet paper, hessian, buttons, treasury tags, wool labels, scrap netting.....

I think these are my favourites. The tights and socks worked so well over the coat hangers. The seam of the toes became the mouth. they didn't even need much adding to it. On this one, I just cut out fins and tail from hessian, and basic single crochet in black wool, then sewed them on. The buttons were a charity shop find.

I rarely use patterns but these guys were just too hard to pass up on. Most I find on Crochet Pattern Central, but I occasionally buy one, like the Seahorse. I think it was worth the few dollars.

All Quiet on the Blog Front

I have made loads of stuff for the Electric Picnic and am dying to upload photos and patterns, but there just isn't the time!!

I'm finalising my display items, adding a bit here and there. I was hoping to do a big display on using recycled materials with crochet, but alas, TIME as usual, I have only a few samples. But I hope they're enough to give you ideas, on the possibilities and fun you can have using everyday Found objects.

I plan to take a total break from making anything in September, and concentrate on writing up patterns, and catching up on the neglected housework. Even to the point I have decided not to take part in Hat Attack (...I was very torn turning that down...)

But, one thing I'm very pleased about, it the Crochet Liberation Front have finally finished the First Ever Book, and I'm happy and proud to be promoting it at the Festival. Its due out in September, and when I have further details, I'll post them (dates, ISBN etc...)

So, enough chat, back to work....

Electric Picnic

Stitchlily's Woolly Emporium
at the Electric Picnic

Where
I think we're in the walled garden, see map below...

Opening Times
We're open roughly from 11am to 6pm. But if the chat if flowing, we wont stop...

Demonstrations
Demos on crochet and weaving will be done continuously throughout the day. Everyone is welcome to have a go. Why not make something to add to the Reef??

Workshops
There are two workshops on inkle-loom weaving per day with a max of 6 people per class. The workshop will last 2 and a half hours but most people get a crios woven in less that an 2 hours. I've added the extra half hour just so you can relax and enjoy the weaving, or rush off to see a particular band...

Bookings for the workshops will be taken on the Friday or in the morning. As places are very limited I would advise anyone interested to call in on the Friday, and if you're really keen, you can always email me now and book a place!!

The workshops will cost €20- this includes all the materials and worksheets you need to make a beautiful Irish crios. The inkle looms themselves are very easy to make, and if anyone is interested, I will provide all the details necessary to make one of your own.

Times of the Workshops are:

Fri: 3-4.30pm
Sat & Sun: 11-1.30 & 2-4.30pm

Up to date News

Just over a week to go, and theres still so much work to be done!! The Coral Reef is almost finished, just a few threads to sort out, the inkle looms have done a detour to Galway, but will meet me in Stradbally, and the rest of the display work is just about, well thought off, to be honest. Its all hands on threads this week to get the finished display I want. Here's a sneak look...

I managed to tie most of my events in the Ravelympics up with the EP, so any Ravellers out there, you'll see my finished pieces on display. I'm currently awaiting my final drugs test before being able to step up to the Podium and claim prizes for Team Ireland. More on that later...

So, I think we're in the walled garden if anyone is looking for us. Here's a map I copied off the website, but its a bit hard to read.

Nearly there

Its been a long month, trying to get all my stuff together for the Electric Picnic. The marquee I got was bigger then I thought, so I've had fun trying to reassess what I need for my stand. Everyone keeps telling me there's loads of time, but I know Time better than that. It has a habit of sneaking off on you and you don't know where it went so I'm trying to keep a short rein on it. My plan is to have my Crocheted Coral Reef finished by the end of July. With only one week to go, its looking tight, but I think it'll be made, maybe not finished. Tying in ends, and stuffing, oh the joys!!

Greencrafts at the Electric Picnic 2008

I have just received confirmation that I will be doing crochet demonstrations and weaving workshops in the Greencrafts area at this years Electric Picnic.

Crochet: demonstrations are free and will go on continuously throughout the Festival. There will be a small exhibition of crochet in a scientific context.... I'm not going to give away too much, you'll have to come and see.

Weaving: Each person taking part in the workshops will learn the basic technique of weaving, and will make a beautiful length of cloth that can be used in many ways, eg. a belt, a camera or guitar strap, etc... It is a great class for those who have always wanted to try their hand at this ancient art. There is a small fee for the weaving workshops, just to cover expenses and they have to be pre-booked as places are limited so if anyone is interested, please visit the Festival website
