The Curse of the Random Interesting Thing...

I'm sitting here at the computer browsing, doing nothing in particular, waiting for my little fella to go asleep, so I can have a glass of plonk and a bath..Being bored I decided to change my profile on Ravelry.

I was trying to think of a word that described someone who loved textiles. I mean loves textiles.

Eats, sleeps, dreams and collects a vast hoard of books, equipment and materials, which will one day turn into income...

So, I was trying to do one of those random silly searches on google to see if I could find a word. I remember reading some time ago, these woman calling themselves, bi-textual, in other words, knits and Crochets. (really!). Someone else said she was bi-craftual, does 2 different crafts. Something like the word polycraftual then came up, it describe someone who does lots of crafts.

And of course, I cant find it again, The Curse of the Random Interesting Thing...

My old computer died before Xmas. I was organised, I could feel its dying breath, so I saved all my stuff to a portable. But I forgot to save my bookmarks! I'm not quite with all the latest add-ons, that remember things for you online, so I bookmarked anything I wanted to go back to on my computer. I know I bookmarked that page with the bi-poly craftual conversation, but I can't find it again. I feel like I have a curse. I can never remember where I found or saved things. Its one of the reasons I started up a blog, so I could write down in one place anything interesting I find along the way. (I even did it before the computer came along. I have boxes of randomly interesting articles from magazines, scraps of paper, notes, doodles, all waiting to be sorted...)

Its about time I got it together so THIS will be my remedy for The Curse of the Random Interesting Thing... I am going to copy every link I come across here...starting with this

The Phontistery International House of Logorrhea (an online dictionary of obscure and rare words), the Compendium of Lost Words (a compilation of ultra-rare forgotten words), and many other glossaries, word lists, essays, and other language and etymology resources.

I love words, though I can't pronounce or remember most of them, I love hearing or reading new ones. I love the physical act of writing, with a nice pen, I love new fonts. To me its a craft, the craft of words, and writing. So while I was looking for a word to describe someone who loves crafts, in particular textiles, and I came across this website. Its an hour later, no wine, no bath..If you are into words check it out. The Phontistery

I never realised I loved so many things...bibliophily, neophile, nemophilist, neophile, ombrophilous, petrophilous, philocaly, philomath, philotherianism, retrophilia, thalassophilous...

I like lines, theres a whole section on Contour on Shapes. Don't even get me started on the Colour
and Fabric and Cloth

Still no word for a textile lover, textilephile, textilist? I think I'll stick with polycraftual.

So, my Ravelry profile now reads:
Polycraftual:Eats, sleeps, dreams and collects a vast hoard of books, equipment and materials. Mostly textile with a few bits thrown in, all of which is of vital importance to my sanity

  2. I like it. I also love words and fonts. I did lots of calligraphy when I was younger. I actually try to stay away from those websites where you can obsess about computer fonts as I'm afraid of what will happen.
